I agree that few cowhands carried a revolver while working. I portray a Shawnee Indian rancher of 1879 at the Old West Festival in Williamsburg, OH. My audience has gathered because I’m hiring hands to return to my ranch with me since the others went to “see the elephant”. I teach them what they need to know to work for me. The first statement is, “I am the Boss!” The second is, “If ya think yer goin’ to tote them hoglegs, think agin. All firearms belong to me for the duration and will be kept in the chuck wagon. I’ll let ya know if ya need one. I ain’t havin’ no boys with the nickname “Two-Toes.” Ranch owners and trail bosses knew there was more danger from self-inflicted gunshots than from rustlers or Indians.
You’re right on about the sidearm and it being dangerous to the person packing it. Although they were long guns, more pioneers were killed by their own gun than by Indians.
Actually, many an Old West person just stuck his pistol in his waist band.
I had indicated that a lot of Old West towns didn’t allow guns. However, many a towns person still carried a pistol, only it was concealed. That’s how Wyatt Earp did it.
